In Defense of Lorde

Today, many large media companies reported on a blog post by Veronica Bayetti Flores on American feminist blog feministing.com that describes the single “Royals” as being “deeply racist”. Flores says “We all know who she’s thinking when we’re talking gold teeth, Cristal and Maybachs. Why shit on the black folks?”

First, I want to say, REALY!? You’re kidding, right?? “We all know…”? Do we?? Thank you, Flores for being the ultimate all-knowing goddess who knows what is going through all of our heads. Because, obviously it has. Why else would we all love that song so much?

Next, let’s consider who the real racist is here. Is it the 16-year-old artist from New Zealand criticizing consumption and the wealthy? No. It’s you, Flores. You and you’re petty attempts at making a big deal out of nothing. You, you so-called “feminist”, who is just so “open-minded”. You, Flores are the racist.
Gold teeth does not automatically equal black people. In fact, that would be a form of something we call “stereotyping”. Lorde in no way was targeting black people. She was singing about rejecting the materialism that dominates so much of our culture. “Royals” is about enjoying everyday life, even without wealth. She is a genius, a prodigy, and not a racist.

What do you think? Do you agree with Flores? Or do you think she’s being just stupid and attention seeking? Let me know in the comments!!
